Gethsemane is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in East Jerusalem, where, according to the four Gospels of the New Testament, Jesus Christ underwent the Agony in the Garden and was arrested before his crucifixion. The garden is a place of great resonance in Christianity. There are several small olive groves in church property, all adjacent to each other and identified with biblical Gethsemane.
John 18:1 says that Jesus entered a "garden" with his disciples.
According to Luke 22:43–44, there Jesus was in great anguish and prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground." This condition is known in the medical world as hematidrosis.
In this garden is the Church of All Nations, also known as the "Church of the Agony," built on the ruins of a church destroyed by the Sassanid government in 614 AD and a church from the time of the Crusades, which was destroyed in 1219.
