Kendall Jenner Says Kendrick Lamar Makes The BEST MUSIC…Is She RIGHT?
"Rap right now is like not doing it for me." That's Kendall Jenner, yes THAT Kendall Jenner, supermodel, reality TV royalty, person whose opinion on hip hop nobody asked for but we're getting anyway. And honestly the internet is about to lose its mind over this, not because she's completely wrong but because she's a Kardashian saying what a lot of people have been thinking but didn't want to admit.
Here's what happened. On January 9th 2025 Kendall Jenner appeared on the podcast "In Your Dreams With Owen Thiele" and started talking about her music taste. Normal celebrity interview stuff right? Except then she started talking about hip hop. She said "Rap right now is like not doing it for me. I love rap, I do, I love the genre and when it's great it's great. But everything is sounding really repetitive to me."
Now before you roll your eyes and say "okay Kendall go listen to your EDM or whatever" she actually did something smart. She named specific artists she DOES still like. She called Kendrick Lamar's GNX album "great." She said Tyler the Creator's Chromakopia was "amazing." And then she said "I think there's people that are really pushing boundaries, there's a lot of intention."
So let's be clear about what she's actually saying. She's not saying ALL rap is bad, she's saying most MAINSTREAM rap sounds the same but artists like Kendrick and Tyler are the exceptions because they're actually trying new things. And look... is she wrong?
Here's the part people don't want to talk about. Kendall's not the first person to say this. All of 2024 people were having existential questions about hip hop's health because hip hop struggled on the Billboard charts. If you're still with me trying to figure out whether Kendall actually has a point or if we're all just overthinking a celebrity's casual podcast comment, hit that subscribe button right now 🔥
After Kendrick dominated 2024 with the Drake beef and "Not Like Us" becoming a cultural moment, mainstream rap kind of plateaued. The underground scene? Still thriving, still producing incredible music. But most casual listeners don't dig that deep, they stick to whatever Spotify or Apple Music algorithm feeds them. And if you're only listening to what's being pushed by major labels and playlist curators, yeah it probably DOES sound repetitive.
Here's the thing getting lost in all the discourse. Kendall Jenner being the messenger doesn't change whether the message is true. And the uncomfortable reality is that she's articulating something a LOT of people feel but don't want to say out loud because they don't want to sound like haters or oldheads.
She named Kendrick Lamar and Tyler the Creator and you know what those two artists have in common? They don't make "safe" music, they don't chase trends, they don't optimize for playlists or algorithms. Kendrick's GNX dropped with zero promotion, no singles, no rollout. Tyler's Chromakopia was similarly adventurous. These are artists who have "intention," they're making music because they have something to say not because they're following a formula.
Watch until the end because here's the twist nobody's talking about. Kendall Jenner saying this might actually be GOOD for hip hop. When mainstream casual listeners start saying "this sounds repetitive" it creates market pressure for change. Share this with someone who thinks a Kardashian can't have valid opinions about music 💯
Is Kendall Jenner right that mainstream rap sounds repetitive or is she just not looking hard enough for good music? 🤔
Does her opinion matter less because she's a Kardashian or does being a casual listener actually make her perspective more valuable?
Is the "repetitive" problem with hip hop itself or with the industry that rewards playing it safe over innovation? ⚖️
