#dna vs #rna
RNA is less stable compared with DNA molecules. DNA is the #genetic material of the #cell/organism. However, RNA is the expression of those genes by the process of #Transcription. We focused on the stability of DNA and RNA and looked into three key reasons why RNA is less stable compared with DNA.
The First reason why RNA is less stable is that the RNA molecule is single-stranded and DNA is the double-stranded molecule: Double and triple H bonding between A-T and G-C provides thermodynamic stability to the DNA double helix. H-bonds also provide further support for the phosphodiester bond to maintain the helix structure.
The Second reason is pentose sugar (#Deoxyribose /#Ribose sugar): Because of the nature of the hydroxyl group, The presence of an extra hydroxyl group in the #ribose sugar makes the RNA strand more reactive and this can lead to further chemical reactions the structure of RNA.
The Third reason is the presence of Thymine/Uracil base: In RNA molecule, the base #Thymine (T) is replaced by the unmethylated form of Thymine i.e. #Uracil (U) and Uracil is more susceptible to instability. #g5biology #molecularbiology #genetics #biochemistry
