While debt instruments and mutual funds are known for providing a fixed coupon or rate of return, there is a very unique type of debt instrument that can give us fluctuating returns. Such instruments are known as floating rate instruments.
Based upon the concept of floating rate instruments, a floating rate mutual fund is a unique mutual fund scheme that invests in debt instruments whose returns fluctuate depending on the Reserve Bank of India’s interest rate.
As per SEBI, a floating rate fund is an open ended mutual fund scheme with at least 65% of its corpus invested in floating rate instruments.
We will then discuss the basic of these types of funds, and their sub-types. Next, we will touch upon their pros and cons to the various types of investors, and when an investor should choose to put their capital in a floating rate fund.
