New Year’s Day started with a full tank of gas and no fixed plan—just seven hours on the road exploring the wild north end of Vancouver Island. This journey moves through shifting winter landscapes: swollen rivers, storm-driven coastlines, quiet beaches, and long stretches of remote backroads where the scenery—and the mood—constantly changes.
Along the way, I stop at several locations that each carry their own presence and history. One of them is the former RCAF Station Holberg, a World War II–era coastal defense base built to patrol and protect the Pacific shoreline. Though the station itself has largely faded back into the landscape, the isolation and strategic importance of the place can still be felt today.
This drive became more than just travel—it was a way to slow down, reflect, and let the first day of the year unfold naturally. Sometimes the road is the destination, and sometimes it’s the space between places that matters most.
This video is Part One of the journey. The road continues, with more locations and moments to come in the next installment.
