The Tamarindo Estuary is the closest wave to Witch's Rock Surf Camp at just 200 meters to the north. The waves itself is very fun and can sometimes be world class given the right conditions. Most days of the year, the Tamarindo Rivermouth is a mellow beginner - Intermediate wave that packs a little more punch than the beginner's beachbreak.
If you're paddling out at the Tamarindo Estuary for the first time, there are some hazards to be aware of.
Shallow bottom - At low tide when the wave is best, it can get pretty shallow. Make sure you never dive head first when wiping out.
Currents - with the dropping tide, there can be some serious currents that flow out of tnhe estuary. One minute you'll be sitting in the lineup waiting for the next set, the next moment, you'll be 100 meters out to sea if you're not paying attention.
The Wave - when the stars align and Tamarindo does its best Kirra Point impression, you need to ride the wave with caution as there can be big barrels and dredging waves as they unload on a shallow sandbar.
Crocs - Yes, it's true, there are crocodiles in the Tamarindo Estuary. They usually stay deeper in the mangroves and are not usually seen out at sea. It's always safer to surf the Tamarindo estuary with the incoming tide as water is filling up the estuary instead of draining from the estuary. What else more ca we say? It was their home first.
