The Lagoon is a shallow lagoon located in Western Greece. It has a triangular shape and its width varies between approximately 15 to 20 km.
Its maximum depth is 5 to 6 metres although mainly it is less than half a metre deep. Several islands surround the lagoon. Near to the coast, the depth is only 10 cm and it is a swampy area. Many fish and seaweed live in the lagoon. Also many migratory birds. Strabo called the lake Kynia.
The lagoon was partly drained in the 20th century especially in the western portion in which a part of the land extended southward with farmlands and dikes. The island of Aitoliko or sometimes the peninsula extended by 15 km and 200 m making it the longest extension, the eastern half became a canal and it resembles as a dike. It changes all the time, bacause of the tide.
The drone footage is at an area of the national park that there are not birds for safety reasons, 5km east from the center of the park.
Unforunately I noticed ecosystem burden from humans of course. There are many houses in the national park. I am not talking about the fishermen's cabins. These are not a problem. Actual houses with actual waste is the problem.
Let's respect more these creatures. Many of them travel more than 15.000km each year to eat and rest in areas like this!
