Fungi are omnipresent, they profoundly shape the world we live in. They are possessed of a rather selfish attitude and are dependent on subtle forms of attraction. They, like humans, enter into parasitic and symbiotic relationships if it suits their needs.

In Mycelium we travel into a dark universe set in a damp and mouldy cellar. The space is a reflection of the minds and lives of the three people that inhabit it. As they begin to dig deep into their memories and psychological traumas, their search for connection oftentimes leads them on a path that is detrimental to themselves and others. The implicit metaphor at work is that the fungal kingdom reflects many of the interactions and networking systems found among humans, but the fungus’ life-cycle is never ending - it grows, decomposes and in the end regenerates. It shows us a system that is optimised - it creates no waste. In this duality, Mycelium questions humanity’s acts of entanglement, transformation and proliferation.

Pilze sind allgegenwärtig, sie prägen die Welt, in der wir leben, zutiefst. Sie besitzen eine relativ egoistische Einstellung und sind auf subtile Formen der Anziehung angewiesen. Sie gehen, wie Menschen, parasitäre und symbiotische Beziehungen ein, wenn es ihren Bedürfnissen entspricht.

In Mycelium reisen wir in ein dunkles Universum, das in einem feuchten und schimmeligen Keller spielt. Der Raum ist ein Spiegelbild der Gedanken und des Lebens der drei Menschen, die ihn bewohnen. Wenn sie beginnen, tief in ihren Erinnerungen und psychologischen Traumata zu graben, führt sie ihre Suche nach Verbindung oft auf einen Weg, der für sie selbst und andere schädlich ist. Die implizite Metapher ist, dass das Pilzreich viele der Interaktionen und Netzwerksysteme widerspiegelt, die unter Menschen zu finden sind. Doch der Lebenszyklus des Pilzes endet nie – er wächst, zersetzt sich und regeneriert schließlich. Er zeigt uns ein optimiertes System, das nichts verschwendet. In dieser Dualität hinterfragt Mycelium die Verstrickung, Transformation und Verbreitung der Menschheit.
