Focus on cold isostatic pressing!
The CTTC is delighted with the arrival of its new cold isostatic press!
After almost 30 years of loyal services, our old press will soon be handed over to this new equipment, designed and built by EPSI company.
What is cold isostatic pressing?
This method of shaping advanced ceramics makes it possible to achieve high levels of compaction of the green body, and therefore very good mechanical strength to facilitate handling of the green bodies and good densification during sintering.
Another advantage is that these green bodies can be machined in order to reduce the cost of further sintered parts machining, and complex preforms can be produced before sintering.
What are the advantages of this technology?
1️⃣ Part size: this process can be used to produce very large parts with good quality.
2️⃣ Homogeneous properties: pressed parts have a uniform raw density, making it easier to obtain homogeneous mechanical properties after sintering.
3️⃣ Ease of debinding: the low level of organic additives used in powder formulations reduces the risk of defects during the debinding stage.
4️⃣ Wide range of materials: the high pressure applied enable different kinds of technical ceramics to be shaped, from oxides to non-oxides that are difficult to compact.
Our new press has a pressure capacity up to 2,000 bars at room temperature, and mould sizes can reach 1m in height and 25cm in diameter.
