The Sibanye-Stillwater Simulacrum Mining Facility at the University of Johannesburg's Department of Mining Engineering uses extended reality (XR) technology to enhance the education of mining professionals like engineers and surveyors. This digital-twin mining environment combines a physical training area with virtual reality experiences, providing students immersive exposure to the mining environment.
The video also highlights using the Boston Dynamics Spot robot to safely scan underground areas using LIDAR sensors. The 3D terrain models and data collected can aid in mine rescue and recovery efforts. This research is sponsored by Sibanye-Stillwater as part of a master's degree study.
