We’re breaking down a large Sapele log and revealing one of the most spectacular figures nature can produce — crotch grain.
Crotch grain forms where the main trunk splits into major branches. In this area, the wood fibers compress and interlock, creating dramatic, flowing patterns. Once sawn, these sections often display a striking flame-like figure with incredible depth and movement.
To highlight the detail, we apply a light film of water to the freshly milled boards. This simple step enhances the shimmer and brings out the full character of the grain, allowing the figure to stand out beautifully.
Because of its rarity and visual impact, crotch grain Sapele is highly valued for veneers, fine furniture, musical instruments, and luxury interior applications.
