In today’s video, carer Owen follows the herd as they graze near the homestead. He first spots Pisa feeding alongside a giraffe. While giraffes are naturally more skittish due to their size and vulnerability, they often share space with elephants. In moments like this, they exist peacefully in the same environment, going about their feeding in their own way.
As Owen catches up with the rest of the herd, we get a closer look at elephants like Tokwe, the matriarch, Bubi, with her distinctive eyelashes, and Khanyisa, the youngest member of the herd. Owen shares insights into their seasonal diet. In the summer, the elephants prefer fresh, green grass, but as the seasons change and the grass dries up, they seek out other vegetation to sustain them. At night, the herd receives supplementary food, including cut branches, lucerne, bana grass and sometimes treats like cabbages, oranges and sweet potatoes donated by local farmers. Due to the immense amount of food elephants need to consume each day, they spend the majority of their time grazing, ensuring they meet their nutritional needs for the day ahead 🐘
