Three VERY different pieces performed with the new Lunette-inspired synth.
Buy the first song as part of a vocal EP here: https://jayhosking.bandcamp.com/album...
00:00 - Song with vocals and guitar
04:20 - Fun chaos with LXR-02
08:43 - Ambient solo work
Neutral Labs sent me along the Luna for free to try out. Take that as you will. I made three very different jams with it, with the first being a live session that was then multi-tracked over, and then two other completely live sessions with only the gear on the table.
In all fairness, I wasn't sure at first what I would be able to do with the Luna musically. I tend to prefer "knobby" interfaces, and this was basically a huge matrix of patch points. The basic concept of Luna—five square waves plus a bunch of utilities—led to a completely different way of working, and as such led to some musical results I wouldn't have found otherwise. The Luna can be a traditional synth—use the clock divider to make sub-oscillators!—or a three-voice groovebox or a noise machine or whatever else you want. It plays friendly with MIDI and CV, but also can get itself going without any external inputs.
Here, I had meant to make one musical piece in order to release something around the release of the Luna. Then I stumbled into a full song that demanded a musical arrangement. One point in Luna's favour. Then, while I was arranging that song, I stumbled on more creativity and an entire second song idea; I quickly hooked up the Erica Synths LXR-02 and went ape. Then, when I tried AGAIN to get the first song finished, I stumbled once again into a beautiful patch and synth sketch, this time ambient. I had to deliberately try to NOT be creative with it or else I would have never finished up this video. Ultimately that's the best sign of a synth for me: something that keeps inspiring me.
Lots of other gear in this video, too:
GFI Systems Solis Ventus on reverb and delay for the Luna. I'll probably make a dedicated video on this one in the near future, and it'll probably show up in a bunch of other jams as well. Versatile and easy enough to use. I like it so far!
Squier Bass VI through Union Lab compressor, Strymon Iridium amp sim, and Boss DM-101 delay. Beautiful sound. Bass VI is my new favourite songwriting tool.
Ernie Ball St. Vincent guitar through a similar setup to the Bass VI, plus the Homework Blues pedal from Winnipeg Electrical Co.
Electro-Voice RE-20 microphone for vocals.
XLN Audio's Addictive Drums 2 for the drums on the first song.
For the first song, there's a full track breakdown and walkthrough for the multitrack and mix on my Patreon.
Thanks for listening.
