After Boston, NY, and Philadelphia, we've finally made it to our 4th major Chinatown on the East Coast - Washington D.C.! Though this is the SMALLEST major Chinatown I've ever visited, I still enjoyed my time here finding all the Chinatown characteristics in the area!
Chinese immigrants first arrived in the D.C. area in the 1850s, and established a Chinatown near Pennsylvania Ave. This Chinatown would be demolished in the 1930s due to the construction of federal buildings (what is now the Federal Triangle). The Chinese community would relocate to the area around H Street NW, where Chinatown is located today. Chinatown would thrive for a few decades, but after the 1968 D.C. riots and the decline of the downtown area, most Chinese residents would move to the suburbs of Virginia and Maryland.
Today, D.C.'s Chinatown is more of a historic district with a huge Chinatown Gate, a few Asian restaurants, shops, and a small Chinese population.
