Planting Wild Yams with Plastic Sheeting:
These two farmers are hunched over their fields! They're using black plastic sheeting to grow wild yams. It's a simple yet clever method:
• Spread the sheeting like a blanket: First, level the ground, then, as shown in the video, lay the black plastic sheeting firmly on top of the soil. This sheeting keeps the heat in and repels weeds, allowing the yam seedlings to grow comfortably underneath!
• Plant yams like "sticks": Dig a small hole in the sheeting, insert the yam root, and cover with soil. The old farmer says, "Digging a hole in the sheeting doesn't damage the roots; the yams burrow into the soil like earthworms!"
• Rely on the weather for management: The plastic sheeting traps rainwater, reducing the need for watering. At harvest time, lift the sheeting, and the yams will pop out in clusters. It's much easier than traditional planting methods!
Key Benefits:
• Weed Control and Labor Saving: Covering with the cloth prevents weeds from growing even after being sun-dried, eliminating the need for constant weeding.
• Heat Retention and Growth Promotion: The black cloth absorbs heat, raising soil temperatures and promoting faster yam growth.
• Suitable for Small Plots: These small plots can be flexibly utilized in field corners to minimize waste.
