It’s easy to turn stale MIDI clips into humanized MIDI performances.
When you use the pen tool to input your MIDI notes, they get quantized and have a static velocity…. that makes it stale. Let me show your two great tricks to making it more “human” using built-in effects in Ableton Live.

I use two things all the time. One for Velocity and one for Timing. They are both built into Ableton Live and give greet results adding randomness (humanize) quickly and easily to any MIDI clips you might have.

Randomize MIDI Note Velocity
First, I use the Velocity MIDI effect to add some randomness to the velocity values of each of the MIDI notes. In fact, there is a preset called “Add Some Random”which does the job!

Some times I reduce the Out Low value and the Range to get things a bit less random, but for most things, Add Some Random works like a charm!

Randomize MIDI Note Timing
Next, I use a groove. Now, I’m not saying add a groove to your MIDI. While that is useful in many instances, that’s not what we are doing here.

In fact, you can add any groove to your MIDI clip. Then set all the values to 0 except the Random value. That I like to set between 20 – 30, depending on how sloppy in want it to be.

This adds subtle timing fluctuations to the MIDI notes and it sounds great.
