"Of the six sides recorded at Dallas, “Confessin' the Blues” proved to be the sleeper. It would be the pivotal performance affecting the image and future of the Jay McShann Orchestra. Perhaps because it was recorded at the end of the afternoon when everyone was loose, and because the performance was impromptu, with no instrumental distractions for the juke box listener, “Confessin' the Blues” came off with a relaxed, uningenuous quality. Manly, pleading, and breathless, Walter Brown sings a variant of the standard urban blues:
Baby, here I telephone you with my heart in my hand,
I want you to read it, mama, hoping that you'll understand.
Well, baby! - Mama, please don't dog me round,
I’d rather love you, baby, than anyone else I know in town.
And, as McShann's insinuating piano tinkles on, Walter Brown concludes with the irresistible:
When my days are long and dreary and the sun refuse to shine,
I would never be blue and lonely if I knew that you were mine,
Well, baby - will you make everything all right?
Can I have you today, babe? Or will it be tomorrow night?"
