Optimize DNA Results by Contacting DNA Matches - (Quick Genealogy Tip #21)

Описание: In this quick genealogy tip I discuss contacting DNA matches. There are a lot of things you want to do and things you don't want to do when contacting your DNA matches. The first thing you want to do is properly introduce yourself and what you are looking to get out of looking into the match. Be sure to include what kits are being matched and what website the match is on (Family Tree DNA / FTDNA, My Heritage, 23andMe, Ancestry DNA, Gedmatch, Geni.com, etc). Be sure to include pertinent information on the matches as well including surnames, locations, dates, shared centimorgans (cM), and any hypothesis you may have come up with based on the available information. Also include a link to any digital family trees you have as this will give the contacted person a chance to browse the tree on their own.

Along with things to be sure to include there are things you want to avoid. Avoid spamming every single match you have, be precise in which DNA matches you choose to contact. Avoid being vague, you want to include all pertinent information but at the same time don't go overboard and detail your entire family. Be concise. Don't assume the person you're contacting is the actual match, many people manage multiple DNA kits on multiple websites and may not even be related to your match. Lastly, avoid the assumption that your match knows anything about genetic genealogy, genealogy, or even their own family history. A lot of people are taking DNA tests now but for many their only interest in the DNA test results are the genetic admixtures, so don't be surprised if you don't always get a response.
