In this powerful and emotional full-length interview, we sit down with Papua New Guinea rugby league legend Marcus Bai, who opens up about his extraordinary journey from a remote village in West New Britain to the global stage of professional rugby league.
A proud son of Ulamona Village in Bialla, Marcus shares how he went from fetching water and farming with his siblings to winning the 1999 NRL premierships with Melbourne Storm, lifting the Super League trophy with Leeds Rhinos in 2004, and representing PNG with pride as a Kumul on the international stage.
Now, as a Board Member of Papua New Guinea’s National Rugby League team, Marcus is helping shape the country’s future in sport. With the announcement of PNG’s entry into the NRL competition by 2028, he sees rugby league as not just a sport—but a national platform for unity, pride, and opportunity.
He also works in Community Affairs with K92 Mining, where he uses his rugby league legacy and communication skills to engage landowners, build trust, and create meaningful partnerships between local communities and the mining sector.
🔶 In This Interview, Marcus Reflects On:
His tough but loving upbringing in a family of 10 children
The strong values passed down from his father and the Catholic faith
How he broke through PNG’s local leagues and into global rugby
Playing against the world’s best: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa & more
Representing PNG in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup
Winning the 1999 NRL Premiership with Melbourne Storm
Becoming a role model for players like Justin Olam
Using rugby league to build stronger community relations through his work with K92 Mining
His hopes for PNG’s next 50 years in sports, leadership, and nationhood
💬 “When I wore the Kumul jersey, I wasn’t just playing for my family—I was representing 800 languages and a whole nation. That’s what PNG means to me.”
👨👦 Carrying the Legacy: The Bai Boys in Australia 🇦🇺🏉
Marcus also speaks with deep pride about his three sons, who are now following in his rugby league footsteps in Australia:
Aston Bai is studying pharmacy while playing first grade for Burleigh Bears.
Cooper Bai recently starred for the Queensland Maroons Under-19s and is debuting in the Queensland Cup with Tweed Seagulls.
Logan Bai, the youngest, is signed with the Dolphins Under-15s.
“They know they must earn their way. I didn’t get handed anything. Neither will they.”
📢 As Papua New Guinea celebrates 50 years of Independence, Marcus offers a heartfelt message to the youth of today:
“The government has built the bridge. Now it’s up to you to walk across it. Whether through education or sport, the opportunities are there—go and take them!”
🎯 Whether you're a young athlete, a parent, a rugby league fan, or a proud Papua New Guinean—this is a story of faith, determination, and national pride that will move and inspire you.
