Genesis are an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, in 1967. The band's most commercially successful line-up consists of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. The 1970s line-up featuring singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett was among the pioneers of progressive rock. With between 100 million and 150 million albums sold worldwide, Genesis are one of the world's best-selling music artists. Their discography includes 15 studio and six live albums. They have won numerous awards (including a Grammy Award for Best Concept Music Video with "Land of Confusion") and have inspired a number of tribute bands recreating Genesis shows from various stages of the band's career. In 2010 Genesis were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Genesis identify first and foremost as songwriters. Any instruments featured on any of the recordings were used because they helped serve the song. Rutherford later said "We're much more concerned with feel. "Though styles changed dramatically over the group's career, they were always built on musical contrasts and the willingness to experiment. Early lyrics drew from psychedelia, fantasy, mythological figures, and fairytale themes.
Track from 'Genesis', their twelfth studio album released on 3 October 1983. It is their first written and recorded in its entirety at their studio named The Farm in Chiddingfold, Surrey, and the songs were developed through jam sessions in the studio with nothing written beforehand. Genesis was the group's greatest commercial success at the time of release, becoming the band's third straight album to reach No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. It also reached No. 9 on the US Billboard 200, where it sold over 4 million copies.
The group were unable to come up with a suitable name, so they used Genesis to emphasize the fact that it was written collectively. The cover was designed by English artist Bill Smith, who had also produced the artwork on Abacab. The front photograph originates from shapes from his one-year-old son's shape sorter toy that were left on the carpet after he had gone to bed. Mike Rutherford referred to this album as one of his favorite Genesis albums.
"Taking It All Too Hard" is the sixth track from the 1983 album Genesis by Genesis. It is known for Tony Banks' work on his Yamaha CP-70 electric piano. It included the eighth track from the album, "Silver Rainbow," as the B-side. No music video was made for this single, and the song has never been performed live by the band. This was the last single for the band until the band's only No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit, "Invisible Touch", in 1986. It was only released in the US in the summer of 1984 and peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart receiving significant airplay, but stalled at No. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100.
