East meets West at the Royal Academy.
Last week, The Wick’s founder Katy paid a visit to the Royal Academy of Arts to explore a landmark group exhibition alongside its curator, Tarini Malik.‘The Story of South Asian Art: Mrinalini Mukherjee and Her Circle’ seeks to explore the roots of Indian modernist art movement and challenges the dominant Euro-centric storytelling around this narrative.
Central to this reframing is Mrinalini Mukherjee, widely regarded as a pioneer of Indian contemporary art. Her life and practice unfold in dialogue with those of her mentors, friends, and family, guiding viewers through key milestones in her artistic journey from her time at two of India’s most influential art institutions in Santiniketan and Baroda to the breadth of her four-decade career, and situating her work within the wider story of the emergence of South Asian contemporary art and culture. Education sits at the heart of the RA, and the art institutions Mukherjee attended act as thematic anchors paving the way through the exhibition.
Featuring around 100 works spanning across mediums including sculpture, ceramics, painting, printmaking and textiles, ‘The Story of South Asian Art’ reveals the networks of support, collaboration and creative exchange that shaped the development of modern and contemporary art in South Asia.
The exhibition is a collaboration with The Hepworth Wakefield who will present an expanded version in 2026.
On view until 24 February 2026
