COMPOSER'S NOTES (www.zrstroope.com)
The Tarantella is a popular southern Italian dance with 11th c. origins. Of the many possible sources of the dance, the most popular comes from the villages of Tanto and Tarentum ("little spider"), Italy. During the harvest, workers in the field were sometimes bitten by the tarantula spider. To combat the bite, the afflicted workers went into a frenetic, almost musical exorcism to sweat the venom out of their pores. This work combines that tradition with the very unconventional - and perhaps (to some) - the almost absurd literary style of Christopher ("Kit" or "Jack") Smart. Smart had many obsessions, and one was with the alphabet. As a result, "Tarantella" has an almost patter effect with sets of words in alphabetical order, while other text (such as "Ex!"), or visual/sound effects like stomps, leap out from nowhere. The convergence, then, of the medieval tarantella (spider dance), the writings of a brilliant poet who bordered on insanity, and the infusion of strong, descriptive and otherwise random word rhymes, synthesize to make for great dramatic effect and possibility for the ensemble.
