I’m Christian Staples with Arctic Spas. Everyone is looking for the maintenance free spa. Years ago a trend in the spa industry was started to move away from wood to composite. Now pretty much every spa manufacture only makes composite cabinets. These are usually referred to as maintenance free since you don’t have to re-stain them.

That being said, many people ask us why we still produce cedar cabinets. The issue really has never been the maintenance as other manufactures would suggest. The issue with typical wood cabinets is that they would fall apart. The Arctic Cedar cabinet is made with clear cedar, it is 5/8” thick and it is tongue and groove. This means that every piece of wood is held in place by the piece next to it and the top and bottom rails. Then we add the 3-4” of urethane foam sprayed to the back. This acts like glue to further strength the cabinet. In the end, the Arctic Cedar Cabinet does not fall apart.

So why would you choose one cabinet over the other? With us it really comes down to personal preference. The composite cabinets come in 2 colors and don’t really need maintenance. The cedar cabinet can be custom stained to whatever you want and it will need to be re-stained once a year. Some people like the beauty of the cedar and others like the look of the composite.

Which cabinet will last longer? In reality they both will last for a very long time. As with all composites, the composite cabinets will slowly fade over time. This is the same with siding on your house as well as all spa cabinets. The only way to really restore a composite cabinet is to replace the composite pieces.

With a cedar cabinet, while you do need to re-stain or restore it once a year, you also get the advantage that you get to restore it. Every year you get a new looking hot tub with about an hour of maintenance.
