The turn back procedure for an engine failure after takeoff is mandatory to have for us to be permitted to conduct passenger carrying by flights under the instrument flight rules (IFR) in Prescribed Single Engine Aeroplanes (PSEA).
You can see that it is a fairly drastic procedure, requiring positive nose down pitching to maintain energy as we enter the turn. The prop is then feathered, which reduces drag considerably.
As flap is extended, the view over the nose improves, and you can see that the risk of overrunning the runway is real (with the tailwind being for landed we elected to go around from the turn back). This particular aircraft is a C208B Grand Caravan, fitted with the Pratt and Whitney PT6.
Note, that you shouldn’t try this without significant flight training first!
