On the surface, the flashbacks of Ellis have illustrated the problems in Meredith’s relationship with Derek, but on a different level they’ve reminded fans of Ellis’ struggles and her eventual mental deterioration. Was Ellis Grey really necessary to make Derek’s death more impactful? No, but it did reinforce Meredith’s connection to her mother. It’s been a slow burn set-up to their potentially most devastating link of all.

What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined to strengthen each other, to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable memories.
