Cow Bay beach, Far North Queensland, Australia. This coastal headland is located just north of Daintree River. The iconic Daintree rainforest grows right down to the edge of Coral Sea. It is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage sites meet.

✔ Cow Bay name is thought to be derived from the dugongs, known as sea cows, which come to feed on the seagrass beds in the bay
✔ It may seem tempting to swim in these waters, but Daintree is swarming with saltwater or estuarine crocodiles, the largest living reptiles on Earth, all looming in rivers, watering holes, and the nearby ocean. From around October to June, the waters are also home to dangerous species of marine stingers, most famously Box Jellyfish and Irukandji
✔ At low tide you can walk north round the headland to even more isolated beaches
✔ Cow Bay is also a small community in a rainforest environment where early settlers in the 1880s grew crops such as rice, maize and sugar-cane. Despite a past of farming, logging and grazing, tourism is the main industry and sustainability is the main aim of the local community today
