Winrock International’s USAID-funded Value Chains for Rural Development project in Burma is supporting smallholder coffee farmers with technical training and assistance linking growers to growing domestic and global specialty coffee markets. In cooperation with the Myanmar Coffee Association, Winrock and partner organization, the Coffee Quality Institute, introduced the country’s little-known Arabica varieties to the world in 2015 at the first-ever Coffee Cupping Competition in Rangoon. A panel of three certified international judges (joined by a pair of local/regional judges) roasted, graded and tasted 58 coffee samples to determine if they met international standards for certification as specialty grade, a designation that can help smallholder farmers fetch premium prices in the export market. In all, 42 samples came from smallholder coffee farmers in Southern Shan, growing coffee on plots ranging half-an-acre to five acres, with the remaining samples submitted by larger coffee estates outside of Mandalay. Watch the video to see the country’s first coffee cupping competition, meet some of Burma’s fascinating coffee farmers, and learn how USAID is inclusively supporting increased agricultural productivity and contributing to rural development in Burma by strengthening the coffee value chain.
