The death of Beleg Cúthalion, the great Elven warrior known as the Strongbow, stands as one of the most tragic and transformative moments in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. This pivotal event is told in “The Children of Húrin”, and also recounted in “The Silmarillion” and “Unfinished Tales.”
Yet for a brief time, in Nargothrond, Túrin finds what seems like redemption.
Through the intercession of Gwindor, he is welcomed among the hidden city’s people. They admire his strength and valor, and soon he becomes a chief captain under Orodreth, urging open war rather than secrecy. He reforms the city’s defenses and leads its warriors to many victories. Finduilas, the king’s daughter, loves him deeply, though he cannot return her affection. For a while, he knows comradeship, feasts, and honor — the closest thing to peace his cursed life will ever allow.
Lyrics -
Flinding go-Fuilin, faithful-hearted,
Beleg’s blood upon his hand,
From leafy mould the hero parted,
Hid him in a thorn-tree mound.
“O son of Húrin, woe unbroken,
Why sit in sorrow’s silent night?
What hope remains, what counsel spoken,
To ease thy heart or mend thy fright?”
But Túrin answered, darkly, dreadfilled,
“I stay with Beleg, leave him not!
O Death, come near; my soul is chilled,
Crush me cold where his life was caught.
Flinding, fearing, yet wrathful, spoke:
Arise! Thy pride is yet unbound.
Not thus did Húrin on Thangorodrim’s rock
In chains of grief sit sorrow-crowned.
Yet Túrin raged, the sword he sought,
Where lies it, murderer? Make amends!
If Death denies me, by steel be brought,
And to cold sleep my anguish ends.
Seek not to slay the fallen hero,
But let his vengeance live through thee;
Let Boglir’s legions taste their woe,
And Morgoth’s hate die bitterly.
Then Túrin leapt with fierce defiance,
Coward Orcs, turn not away!
The sword of Beleg and my alliance
Shall strike your host ere ends the day!
But Flinding, wise, his counsel offered:
Rest now, for strength and mind recover.
Vengeance delayed is fully proffered;
The fight shall wait, the rage is sober.
Beneath the tangled trees they pondered,
Till dusk and stars the forest claimed;
Beleg’s grave with solemn care they honored,
Leaves heaped o’er him, the hero named.
Túrin kissed the cold lips in sorrow,
Laid bow beside, and whispered low,
Now fare thee well in halls tomorrow,
Where Taur-nu-Fuin’s dark waters flow.
And thus they wandered, darkly hidden,
By Narog’s stream and forest deep;
Through shadowed hills by fate forbidden,
By peril stalked and foes to keep.
At last they reached the mound of memory,
Where blood of battles long ago
Had named the field of Unnumbered Tears,
And moonlight bathed the haunted woe.
Through winter wild and summer laughing,
By rivers, hills, and woodland ways,
Túrin and Flinding, ever striving,
Kept hope alive through darkest days.
Till Nargothrond, with towers shining,
Greeted them with cautious cheer;
Flinding named, their trust combining,
The lost was found, the way made clear.
And there was Finduilas, maiden slender,
Whose love and pity lit the gloom;
Her voice, a balm, and heart defender,
Softened the shadow of doom’s tomb.
Yet still in Túrin’s soul was sorrow,
The years of grief had scarred his mind;
Through feast and laughter, night and morrow,
In loyal hearts a home he’d find.
So wanderers of fate and darkness,
By courage, grief, and friendship tried,
Kept hope alive through pain’s harsh harness,
Till love and loyalty stood beside.
