This morning's closing hymn reminds us of God's power through creation and redemption, and causes our faith to be strengthened through his love and sacrifice. The original text of How Great Thou Art (containing nine stanzas altogether) was written in 1886 by a Swedish pastor Carl Boberg as a response to his encounter with a violent lightning storm which was immediately followed by sunshine, a rainbow, and birds singing in the trees. Swedish congregations began to pair the text with local folk tunes which eventually were modified into the melody as we sing it today. Despite its popularity in Sweden (and subsequently Germany and Russia), it wasn't until 1925 that it was translated into English by missionaries serving in Ukraine. Congregations in the United States became aware of How Great Thou Art through the evangelistic crusades of the 1940s and 1950s led by Billy Graham and others, and the four stanzas with which we're now familiar occupy most hymnals.
