The dragon is perched atop the building at 826 S. 3rd St, Renton Washington. You can see some seismic damage at the roofline. Closer inspection reveals further damage around the windows and other areas...it looks like the dragon caused this destruction when he smash landed on the rooftop!
The damage actually happened years earlier, in the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.
The dragon sculpture was completed and installed in April 2019. The project was a collaboration between Marsha Rollinger of the Renton Municipal Arts Commission, and Dylan Neuwirth of Western Neon Seattle. During fabrication he was being called "Murray," but the city of Renton held a naming contest, and the public voted to name him "Erasmus," after Erasmus M. Smithers, the founder of the city of Renton.
Still, most people just call him the Rooftop Dragon.
Pinetop Jackson recently had the opportunity to venture atop the roof and get a behind-the-scenes look at the dragon's perch!
The sculpture consists of six separate pieces...the head, two claws, two wings and a tail. It's all mostly aluminum, and together it weighs 710 pounds.
The dragon has color-changing eyes. Smoke & fog can emit from his mouth and nose for special occasions. The weathered patina was created by painting the metal black and then sanding it down a bit.
The sculpture cost $101,000 and was funded by a city tax program called 1% For Art.
