In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us the difference between pride and humility through the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. The Pharisee, filled with self-righteousness, prays only to glorify himself, while the humble Publican simply begs for God’s mercy: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”
This homily reflects on why humility is the foundation of true prayer and how pride can destroy even our good works. Drawing on the wisdom of the Church Fathers—St. Augustine, St. Basil, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Thomas Aquinas—we are reminded that only the humble will be exalted, and those who exalt themselves will be humbled.
🙏 Practical takeaways for daily life:
Examine the motives of your prayers and good works
Resist prideful comparisons with others
Practice humility in speech, obedience, and charity
Look to Christ and Our Lady as perfect models of humility
