Students at a number of schools across China are enjoying a better meal time experience thanks to the introduction of a digital smart canteen system which enables youngsters to pre-order their desired dishes and collect them in a smooth manner.

The innovative new method has streamlined the traditional lunchtime rush, with no more long lines as students can now swiftly retrieve their chosen meal from the designated pick-up point, while the system also greatly reduces overall food waste as meals are made to order.

In the Shenyang No.5 Middle School in northeast China's Liaoning Province, the smart canteen offers dozens of nutritious meals and special dishes which students can select in advance on their phone. When the lunch bell rings, they can head straight to the specific counter to pick up their meals.

"We can order whatever we want in advance on our phone. We eat better with less waste now," said one satisfied student.

The smart canteen system is also effective in ensuring no large crowds gather as epidemic prevention precautions continue, allowing some 1,000 students to pick up their meals in no more than five minutes.

As the orders are all placed in advance, school kitchens can precisely monitor the number of meals prepared and adjust the ingredients accordingly, which drastically cuts down on food waste.

"There used to be about seven buckets full of food waste a day, but now there is less than one bucket a day. The system really helped to reduce food waste," said Liang Junxiang, deputy secretary of the party committee at Shenyang No. 5 Middle School.
