One of my favorite moments at any family gathering comes after the meal is over. Everyone is full. The conversation slows. And the kitchen is left in complete disarray. Pots stacked everywhere. Plates piled high. A kind of beautiful chaos that shows up when people have been together for a while.
⠀
I love stepping into that mess. Washing the dishes. Drying them. Putting everything back where it belongs. There’s something deeply satisfying about taking disorder and slowly turning it into clarity. One plate at a time.
⠀
It struck me one morning that this is the same way I’ve always approached writing. As a writer, you’re handed chaos. It shows up loud, emotional, complicated, and unfinished. And your job is to sit with it long enough to find the shape. To decide what matters. To place each piece where it belongs so the whole thing makes sense.
⠀
That process stayed with me through years of writing for The Cosby Show, creating Roseanne, and building Home Improvement. Every room, every story, every character started as a pile of ideas that needed patience, care, and attention before they could become something coherent and true.
⠀
Writing isn’t about inventing order from nothing. It’s about honoring the mess and believing it can become meaningful. Just like a kitchen after a big meal, the chaos is proof that something good happened there. You simply take your time, stay present, and trust that clarity will come. One small act at a time.
