'The year 90-91 brought with it the Madrid Peace Conference, and it seemed that the Palestinians' dream was close to being realized - an independent state where we could shape our destiny. For the first time, I drew hope from an international process that Palestinians might live lives of peace and dignity. Almost 20 years have passed since then. They brought with them small and large disappointments, but mainly a legacy of bitterness.
But the solutions to the conflict and the dangers that will arise if we don't resolve it haven't changed. In my opinion, continuing the current status quo will only lead to the radicalization of the Palestinian people and contribute to bringing about the end of the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. Meanwhile, the situation of Palestinians living within Israel is deteriorating, and with it, Israel's stated values, which have been damaged and distorted by the occupation.'
