In this episode of my no-toll road trip through Portugal, I leave the granite boulders of Monsanto behind and head toward the Serra da Estrela, the country’s highest mountain range. The plan? Explore the Jewish heritage of Belmonte, hike to a nearby waterfall, and finish the day in Manteigas, a charming little town in a glacier valley. It didn't go as planned.
Still, there’s beauty in the mishaps. The mountain roads were stunning, the views worth every detour, and the day turned into one of those travel stories you’ll laugh about later.
