After traveling in our van, Clever Girl, for over a year, we we thought ourselves fairly well-traveled. We had seen 17 states and spent time in dozens of cities. But, neither of us had ever left North America. So, when we found affordable air travel from a new Icelandic airline called Play, we decided to go for it. This is the first chapter of our adventure to the UK and Ireland.
The first leg of the journey was a 12-hour drive to a small regional airport in New York State. From there, we flew to Reykjavik, and then on to Dublin. By the time we finally arrived in the Capital of Ireland, we were exhausted. So we had a couple giant plates of Indian food from a restaurant called Govinda's before taking a nap at our Hostel. After getting a little rest, we began our Dublin Pub Crawl. We started at The Stag's Head, a dark, wood adorned pub from the 1770s. A group of Dubliners taught us the proper method of drinking a Guinness: 1. Let it settle until it's solid black 2. On your first drink, drink it down to the middle of the "G". We loved chatting with this group and it was amazing to make a connection like this only a few hours after landing in Ireland. After walking (the wrong way) around the city for a while, we made it to our next pub, Darky Kelly's. Here we heard our first music of the trip; It was open mic night and several Irish musicians played their originals. Our third pub, The Brazen Head, is the oldest in Dublin, dating back to 1198. It was a amalgamation of different buildings that probably shared almost nothing in common with its original form. Nonetheless, we had some terrific Irish gin and tonics. Our fourth and final pub of the night (the crawl was doomed from the moment we had three drinks at the first pub) was Kehoe's. It dates from 1803 and features several snugs offering a little privacy even while the rest of the bar is busy. We left, intending to grab a bite to eat, only to find that the city shuts down fairly early. Fortunately, vegan options abound in Ireland and we had dinner at a Burger King!
Dublin made quite an impression on us and we would return a couple of days later to see more of its offerings. But next up is our favorite region we traveled: the West of Ireland. Be sure to subscribe to our channel to catch the next chapter of our adventure!
