“Lochroyan” is a reimagining of the traditional Scottish ballad “The Lass of Lochroyan,” also known as “Lord Gregory” and “The Lass of Roch Royal.” Walter Scott printed a version in Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, and scholars list it as Child 76 with early printings in the late 18th century.
The classic scene is stark and unforgettable. A woman arrives in wind and rain, begs Lord Gregory to open the door, and proves herself by naming their love tokens. Many variants end in loss or drowning, and the “red gold” and “diamond fine” rings are the proof that binds the tale together.
This version keeps the knock at the door, the sea crossing, and the token test. It shifts the voice to Annie speaking in the now, clear and steady, asking to be named and let in. The language is modern and direct, with Scots phrases echoing the source. The ending leans toward welcome instead of tragedy, a small door opening after a long storm.
