How to repair Honda Cd70 clutch and pressure plates and clutch system
Replacing the clutch plates on your Honda CD70 is a standard maintenance task. This guide explains how the clutch works and the steps to replace it, helping restore smooth gear shifts and power delivery.
Understanding the CD70 Clutch System
The clutch is a pack of alternating plates housed in the engine crankcase. When you pull the lever, the clutch lifter mechanism disengages the pack. This stops power transfer to the gearbox, allowing you to change gears. Releasing the lever re-engages the plates. Friction and heat wear them down over time, leading to slippage and poor acceleration.
Key Replacement Parts:
· Friction Plates: These have a high-quality friction material for grip. They are designed to withstand operational heat.
· Steel/Metal Plates: These smooth plates alternate with the friction plates.
· Clutch Lifter: This critical component ensures smooth, precise operation. It's good to inspect it during replacement.
Friction Plate Specifications:
· Core Material: Premium friction material
· Key Design: Heat-resistant for consistent performance
· Typical Weight: Approximately 59.7 grams per plate
· Common OEM Part No.: 22201087010
Replacement Process in Four Phases
Phase 1: Preparation & Access
1. Place the bike on a center stand.
2. Drain the engine oil.
3. Remove the right-side engine cover to expose the clutch assembly.
Phase 2: Clutch Pack Removal
1. Loosen the clutch spring bolts evenly in a criss-cross pattern.
2. Remove the pressure plate.
3. Carefully extract the entire stack of alternating friction and steel plates. Note their order for reassembly.
Phase 3: Inspection & Installation
1. Clean the clutch basket grooves of any debris or burrs.
2. Soak new friction plates in fresh engine oil for 10-15 minutes.
3. Reinstall the plates in their original alternating sequence.
4. Replace the pressure plate and tighten the spring bolts evenly to the specified torque.
Phase 4: Reassembly & Refill
1. Replace the engine cover gasket and reinstall the cover.
2. Refill the engine with the recommended amount and grade of new oil.
After replacement, the clutch should engage smoothly. Allow a short break-in period of gentle riding for the new plates to seat properly.cd 70 clutch adjustment
