The day is spent traveling from Lake Biwa to Kanazawa by train, then continuing by car into the countryside before arriving late at night in Nanto, deep in rural Toyama Prefecture
We stay at a boutique hotel located on temple grounds, featuring a modern Japanese interior set within a peaceful, historic setting. After checking in, we head out for yakitori, then wake up to a calm morning and a traditional Japanese breakfast.
Before leaving Nanto, we take time to explore the temple grounds, then drive to the Gokayama villages, a UNESCO World Heritage area known for its historic gassho-zukuri farmhouses. We first visit the larger village, stopping for handmade soba, before continuing on to a smaller, quieter village surrounded by mountains.
This video is a slow-travel look at hidden rural Japan, focused on unique accommodations, local food, and places far from the usual tourist route.
