📖 “So Ebedmelech the Ethiopian took the men with him… and let down old cast clouts and old rotten rags by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.” – Jeremiah 38:11 (KJV)
In today’s morning devotion, we step into one of the darkest moments in Jeremiah’s life. Because he faithfully proclaimed God’s message, he was lowered into a muddy cistern—an empty well filled with mire. There was no water, only sinking mud. Left there, he would have slowly died.
Jeremiah 38 reminds us that obedience does not always protect us from hardship. Sometimes faithfulness leads to the pit. Yet even there, God was not absent.
Enter Ebed-Melech—a foreign servant with courageous compassion. He approaches the king and pleads for Jeremiah’s life. With ropes and rags, he carefully lifts the prophet from the mire. It is a tender and powerful picture: God uses unexpected people to bring deliverance.
The chapter reveals that when we are at our lowest—misunderstood, opposed, or sinking—God sends help. Rescue may not always come immediately, but it comes precisely. The ropes of mercy reach into the deepest pits.
Jeremiah 38 teaches us that no dungeon is too deep for divine intervention. The God who allows the trial also appoints the rescue.
This devotion encourages us: if you are in the mire, hold on. Help is on the way. And perhaps, like Ebed-Melech, you are called to be someone else’s rope.
Key Takeaways:
Faithfulness may lead to hardship, but God remains present
God often uses unexpected people as instruments of rescue
Compassion and courage can save a life
No pit is beyond God’s reach
Deliverance may come quietly—but it comes
