The challenge of re-engaging at-risk students is being tackled in West Auckland schools working with the Achieving @ Waitakere Trust.
Programme leadership includes coordination between school principals. A purpose-built Alternative Education Centre is supporting learning, while dedicated kaitautoko work with students and staff to help ākonga return to mainstream classes.
Collaborative relationships across a range of agencies, coordination between schools and enlisting whānau support, are dramatically improving outcomes. Three-quarters of alternative education students now move on to further education or training.
