High Intensity threshold training means slightly longer intervals where you hold your effort at or right above your threshold power or effort level. This will improve your overall fitness and also get you ready for holding this effort for longer and longer stretches of time.
This fitness improvement can translate in to other activities you enjoy such as running or hiking. Your overall cardio will get a boost.
If you want to translate this workout to an outdoor ride locate a flat or gradual climb where you can bear down and hold these 4 min efforts without downhill induced recovery.
