Описание: This is the third and final segment of my interview with Tazio. Together, we explore key parts of the battlefield around Solferino and Cavriana, visiting several strategic locations: Monte Scala, Monte Fattorelle, Monte Cornale, Costa Mezzana, Pieve Martina, and Monte Fontana. Using both contemporary and modern maps, we help viewers visualize troop movements and terrain to better understand the tactical decisions that shaped the Battle of Solferino.

Weapons, Uniforms, and Battlefield Finds of 1859 — With Tazio
In this episode of Beyond Solferino, we are joined by Tazio, a specialist collector and researcher, for an in depth examination of weapons, equipment, and battlefield artifacts from the Battle of Solferino, San Martino, and the Medole Plain (1859).
Rather than focusing on battlefield narratives, this video explores the material reality of combat during the Second Italian War of Independence, using original infantry rifles, carbines, bayonets, uniforms, and artifacts carried and used by Austrian, French, and Piedmontese soldiers.
Tazio presents and explains items from his collection and from the battlefield itself, including:
• Austrian infantry weapons, including
o Augustin System rifles
o Lorenz rifled muskets (Model 1849 & 1854)
o Short Lorenz carbines for light infantry and NCOs
• Piedmontese weapons, including
o Smoothbore infantry rifles
o Bersaglieri carbines firing Peters expansion bullets
• French weapons, including
o Model 1842 rifles converted to rifled barrels
o Chasseur and Zouave carbines
o Stemmed (tige) muzzle loading systems
The discussion explains how different loading systems, bullet designs, and barrel materials affected battlefield performance, accuracy, overheating, and long term weapon modification—especially in response to the intense firing at Solferino.
This episode also features:
• Rare cavalry carbines with unit markings
• Original Austrian uniforms and jackets, including regimental identification marks
• Headgear insignia, ammunition box remains, bayonet fittings, and personal items
• Battlefield finds tied to specific units, including French Voltigeurs, Austrian Jäger, Bersaglieri, and Hussars
By examining weapons wear, battlefield recovery, and material condition, this video helps explain how the Battle of Solferino was actually fought—from the soldier’s point of view—connecting tactics, technology, and terrain directly to physical evidence.
This episode is part of an ongoing Beyond Solferino series documenting the Battle of Solferino and San Martino through terrain analysis, military technology, and original research.
