On the Yard (1978) is a rarely seen prison drama that should be a cult classic. Directed by Raphael Silver, it stars John Heard as a newly arrived loner doing time for murdering his wife in a fit of rage, and Thomas Waites as the big man on the yard who can deliver anything you want, for a price.
It is one of the only films on the subject that doesn't show (or even discuss) rape, and that contains very little physical violence, other than one scene where a cigarette debt gets out of hand and leads to an unintended death. Even the Waites character is amiable and empathetic to most of his fellow prisoners. The film would probably be rated PG-13 if it were released today. It is entertaining and engaging, with an amusingly cornball ending that is literally uplifting.
