Last year was the 30th anniversary of The Smiths Iconic album Meat Is Murder & when I joined Morrisseys band in 99 to begin the Oye Estaban tour it would be the first time he would include the title track to be performed live since the days with his former band. For some reason whilst learning the song we were given free reign to interperet it in our own way & put our own stamp on it so to speak, which isn't always an easy thing when a song is so established & you are been given no guidance (Morrissey wasn't at any of our U.K rehearsals as we were working on the songs for the set)
After learning the song the first thing we did was slow it down which to my mind immediately gave it a darker feel. We also decicded to all come in together from a count-in at the beginning. Boz Boorer came up with a beautiful new guitar part for the beginning too which seemed to make it all the more haunting whilst Alain Whyte played the original swirling guitar part that is so integral to song. Our interpretation was starting to take more Moody & ambient feel & with this we began to play the sections with different dynamics. The verses were played very quiet & lightly & we put a stop at the end of the first verse to give more impact as the song goes into the next part. Towards what is the normal ending of the song we fade out which we played ourselves getting quieter quieter then exploding back in with not only the loudeset part of the song but the loudest part of the whole set.
When we got together with Morrissey for our first rehearsals with him in Arizona we played him our version which he very much liked & it was debuted at the first show in Phoenix a few days later.
I'm glad to see that some of the parts & changes we made are still being used & played by his current band & that the song is now a staple part of his live show too.
To my mind when we first started performing the song a certain amount of the audience didn't quite get it's inclusion in the set & there was a definite vibe of “ well, he could have picked a better Smiths song to play” but as the tour went on it become a more significant part of the show. Moz made great use of the mad end & still does. I guess it musically depics the maddness & senselessness of an animals final moments in the slaughter house.
I recently came across the audio of this live version on-line that I played on & decided to do this drum play thru whilst I was filming a bunch of other drum videos.
The playing isn't overly fancy or technical & its not meant to be. It's about touch, feel & dynamics. The drum mix is a little louder than normal. It's meant to be as its a showcase for the playing & of course it's my video too, so I hope you don't mind..
