Summary
Last December, Australia became the first country in the world to completely ban children under the age of 16 from creating or using social media accounts. This was to address growing concerns about online safety for young people, such as cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and addiction. Under the new rules, platforms are required to block or delete accounts belonging to minors, and failure to comply can result in fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
Following Australia’s strong move, several major European countries—including the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Spain, and Germany—are now discussing or drafting similar restrictions. While many welcome these measures, critics argue that the ban may be ineffective in practice. They point out that many teenagers can easily bypass the restrictions by creating alternate accounts or circumventing verification systems.
Despite the controversy, there is at least one point on which many people agree: social media can have harmful effects on young people’s well‑being. This is why the role of parents is crucial in helping children use social media in healthy ways and why schools and local communities must also remain actively involved.

Since the implementation of social media limits for minors, numerous reports have shown a decrease in screen time and increased time spent with family. It’s a sign that such restrictions play a positive role.
In regions that have adopted restrictions, families often observe that children spend less time on devices and more time connecting with one another. These changes point to the potential benefits of limiting social media use.
Evidence from areas with such restrictions show reduced screen time and increased family interaction, suggesting that these limits effectively support youth mental health.

In policy discussions, the thoughts and experiences of young people who actually use social media have not been reflected. A blanket ban may infringe on the rights of adolescents.
Moreover, policy debates have often failed to incorporate the perspectives of young people who actively use social media. A one‑size‑fits‑all ban risks violating their rights.
Furthermore, the voices of young people who use social media have been absent from the policy-making process. A comprehensive prohibition could ultimately undermine their rights rather than protect them.
