The decades-old water-sharing dispute between Punjab and Haryana has resurfaced over the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) decision to release an additional 4,500 cusecs of water to Haryana. Punjab, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has strongly opposed the move, capping Haryana’s allocation at 4,000 cusecs and deploying police at the Bhakra headworks. Punjab claims Haryana has already used 103% of its annual quota, while Haryana argues that BBMB's decisions are binding on all member states. The standoff has revived tensions over riparian rights and raised concerns about irrigation and drinking water supply in Haryana. The BBMB regulates water for Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh, making this a critical issue with nationwide implications.
