The Balance Sheet is a position statement of assets and liabilities. The two sides of the balance sheet are known as:
• Liabilities side (Left-hand side)
• Assets side (Right-hand side)
The total of assets and liabilities of the balance sheet is always equal due to the Fundamental Accounting Equation.
⸻
📘 Fundamental Accounting Equation
Owner’s Fund + Outside Liabilities = Assets
or
Assets (A) = Liabilities (L) + Owner’s Fund (O)
In the balance sheet, the liabilities side shows Owner’s Fund and Outside Liabilities, while the assets side shows all the assets of the business.
Because of this balance sheet equation, both sides of the balance sheet must always tally.
