Landmines are the deadly legacy of war, and claim some 20,000 lives a year, leaving many more badly injured. According to estimates, around 110 million landmines are scattered across former troublespots, and defusing them is expensive and dangerous.
In southern Sudan, where civil war has left millions dead, a UN team from Bangladesh works with dogs specially trained to sniff out hidden landmines and make the country a safer place for the refugees who fled the country during the fighting. Eight thousand kilometers of road have already been cleared.
