Описание: This episode of JB Junction features artist-sculptor Riyas Komu & artist-curator-painter Bose Krishnamachari, the founders of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

Riyas Komu was born in 1971 in a small town in Thrissur district, and went on to complete both his graduation and postgraduation in Fine Arts from the prestigious Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai. He now lives in Mumbai & has interests in phlanthropy as well.

Hailing from Angamaly, Bose Krishnamachari too studied at Sir JJ School of Art and went on to do his Masters in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London. He was the winner of the Kerala Lalita Kala Akademi Award in 1985 and now serves as the Director of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, in addition to being the president of the Kochi Biennale Foundation.

The duo were approached by MA Baby, then the Minister for Culture, Government of Kerala, to start an international art project in the state. Acknowledging the lack of an international platform for contemporary art in India, Bose and Riyas proposed the idea of a Biennale (a large scale international exhibition) in Kochi on the lines of the Venice Biennale, and that is how the Kochi-Muziris Biennale was born - it is an art exhibition set in spaces across Kochi, Muziris and surrounding islands. The shows are held in existing galleries and halls, and site-specific installations in public spaces, heritage buildings and disused structures. Indian and international artists exhibits artworks across a variety of mediums including film, installations, paintings, sculptures, new media and performance art. Through the celebration of contemporary art from around the world, The Kochi-Muziris Biennale seeks to invoke the historic cosmopolitan legacy of the modern metropolis of Kochi, and its mythical predecessor, the ancient port of Muziris. The Biennale offers a rich programme of talks, seminars, screenings, music, workshops and educational activities for school children and students.
